Stonewall
Kitchens
Quality and exceptional good taste have
been the hallmarks of Stonewall Kitchen
since it's beginning in 1991. Thirteen
years ago, Jonathan King and Jim Stott
set up a three-foot square card table at
the local farmers market, displaying
proudly the few dozen vinegars and jams
they had finished hand labeling just
hours before.
Named
for the graceful stonewalls that
surrounded the original farm in Hampton,
NH where the business took off from, the
growth of the company has been
remarkable. The "hands on" philosophy of
the co-owners is the feeling that flows
through every facet of Stonewall Kitchen
today. In the year 2000, they proudly
opened a 55,000 sq. ft. headquarters on
what is now known as Stonewall Lane in
York, Maine.
Today, Stonewall Kitchen boasts over
6,000 wholesale accounts nationwide,
thriving catalog and web divisions and
six company stores and numerous awards.

New
Hampshire Urban Forestry Center
One of
New Hampshire’s most unique resources is
not found on a majestic mountain top...
or in the state’s many lakes, rivers,
and streams... or even within its
forests. It’s actually located on a
quiet road on the outskirts of
Portsmouth, just waiting to be
discovered by anyone who values New
Hampshire’s woodlands and natural
resources. The Urban Forestry Center,
established in 1976, consists of 182
acres of field, forest, and saltmarsh,
several buildings, and the annual
interest income from a trust fund. The
property is managed by the Division of
Forests and Lands of the Department of
Resources and Economic Development. The
Center is used as a Tree Farm to
demonstrate proper forest management, a
bird and wildlife sanctuary, a garden
and landscape demonstration site, and as
a learning center offering information
and programming in community forestry
planning, forest management, ecology,
tree and plant identification, and
wildlife stewardship. [F/NR/HS]
PSNH
Wood Fired Power Plant
One of
the nation’s largest new renewable
energy projects is now in service in
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, producing
power to tens of thousands of homes and
businesses in the state through the
burning of wood chips.
The $75 million Northern Wood Power
Project, located at Public Service of
New Hampshire’s Schiller Station, has
permanently replaced a 50 megawatt coal
boiler with a state-of-the-art
wood-burning boiler of the same size. As
a result, air emissions at the power
plant are expected to be reduced by more
than 380,000 tons annually through the
burning of clean wood chips. The PSNH
Northern Wood Power Project includes
three hydraulic truck lifts. More than
50 trucks arrive daily, each delivering
about 25 tons of clean wood chips..

building, constructed in the 1940's, as
viewed through a nearby safety mirror.
The addition of the new wood-fired
boiler has helped ensure the continued
existence of the power plant. Computer
technology guides the location of each
delivery to ensure 'first in - first out
A 1,000 foot long conveying system
transports chips from the wood storage
building to the boiler. [F/NR/ES/AM]
Strawbery Bank and All American
Selections Display Gardens
he gardens and grounds at Strawbery
Banke Museum represent a living history
of the New England Landscape. They range
from the story of a tidal salt marsh,
which served as a lively habitat for
native plant, animal and cultural
communities, to the development of that
tidal inlet as a place of dense urban
settlement. Native plants, Colonial
raised-bed kitchen gardens, grand
Victorian Gardens, Colonial Revival
gardens, the humble gardens and work
yards of immigrants and a World War II
Victory garden all serve to tell a story
of our shared heritage on the American
landscape. [AG, HS]
Sanborn Mills Farm
is a traditional New Hampshire working
farm with agricultural fields and
managed forests, timber framed barns and
outbuildings still in use for animals,
and a sawmill, a grist mill (both
water-powered), and a blacksmith shop,
all dating from the 1830s. The farm
buildings are clustered around two dams
at the outlet of Sanborn Pond, and are
surrounded by almost 2,000 acres of open
space in conservation. [AG, AM, F, NR]

Fuller
Gardens
is a public display garden, featuring
over 1700 rose bushes of hundreds of
varieties, formal English perennial
borders,
Japanese
Garden and Koi pond, annual
displays and a tropical and desert
conservatory, all within sculpted
hedges. This turn-of- the-century
garden, designed by Arthur Shurcliff and
the Olmsted Brothers Firm in the 192os
and 30s has recently undergone a major
historic restoration. [AG, HS]

UNH
Organic Dairy Farm
With
contributions from Stonyfield Farm and
the USDA, the universities of New
Hampshire and Maine are able to fund the
first major research project into
organic dairy farming. According to the
executive director of the Organic
Farming Research Foundation, the New
Hampshire Project has the possibility of
being the gold standard for what we’d
like to see in other parts of the
country. At the New Hampshire Burley-Demerrit
Farm , the goal is to help organic dairy
farmers in New England reduce their
reliance on expensive organic grains
grown and shipped from other parts of
the country. [AS, AG, ES]
